3rd Bonus Media Monitor: Disaster Reporting

nytimes.com/2017/09/10/business/media/hurricane-irma-broadcasts-safety.html

“Unnecessary/overly sensational spectactles of correspondents struggling to deliver information”

“Visuals persuade people to take hurricane threats seriously, get them to leave area”

“Veteran reporters say they take every Precaution to stay out of life-threatening situations”

1961: Dan Rather, began custom of reporters broadcasting live from hurricane, first live radar img of Hurricane Carla to show conditions firsthand

Now more common, but also subject to criticism, has to be justified

Reasoning:

TV = visual proof (real, relevant, convince them of danger)

Local reporters = multimedia journalist, improvise w conditions when reporting such news –> have to know when to say no to boss

Pressure or none from boss to do such things?
